Introduction to the Raising Aspirations Programme;
Over the last two years, BSix has been expanding its award-winning programme which prepares Hackney students for university life. Each student taking part in the 'Raising Aspirations' programme forms a unique relationship with a university where they receive tailored advice, guidance and a unique insight into the world of higher education.

Participants attend challenging subject lectures which are pitched at an undergraduate level. They also receive expert advice on their UCAS applications, personal statements and interview techniques.

There are now 13 subject programmes which students can choose from ranging from the Physics programme with Imperial College London to the Politics programme with Queen Mary University of London. We are also very proud to be working with the University of York, our relationship with the top campus university allows us to show our students the different types of university available to them.

The Raising Aspirations programme also offers 60 Hackney students the opportunity to forge a unique link with an Oxbridge college depending on the subject they wish to study at university.
We are currently partnered with Pembroke College, Oxford for Humanities students and Clare College, Cambridge for students wishing to study STEM subjects at university.

Each programme consists of at least; six academic sessions, 3 IAG (information, advice & guidance) sessions and a 3-day study skills programme. Students are paired up with current undergraduate students at each university and students respond extremely positively when given the opportunity to interact with peers just a few years ahead of them. Each student also gets the opportunity to live on the campus of their chosen university each summer where they are assigned a 2,000 word essay and attend seminars and tutorials as well as lots of fun and exciting cultural events.

A recent demos report on opportunities for young people commended BSix on our Raising Aspirations programme;

"Of 290 Level 3 Year 2 students on roll [at BSix] at the end of 2009/10 academic year: 229 applied for HE (79%). 218 received offers (95% success). The number, range and locations of the Higher Education Institutions that BSix students progress on to has increased year on year. BSix also has an increasing number of students who are progressing on to higher ranking Universities."

Our work has only just begun, however. In 2010 the programme catered for 100 students, during the academic year 2011-12 we expect to work with around 350 Level 3 Year 2 students. Our commitment is to raise aspirations and achievement in all our young people. We endeavour to make sure all students achieve what they are capable of and secure a place at a University that is not only suited to their academic abilities but which will also ensure each student progresses to a university experience which they will enjoy and where they will ultimately flourish.
