Dizzy with Success

Another round of record results at BSix

Students and staff are celebrating the continued success of Hackney’s sixth form college, BSix, in Kenninghall Road.

Last year the College saw its A Level pass rate soar by 10% and its A-C rate go up by 20%. The College has maintained this success in 2009 and proved that it is now operating at another level. Indeed, 18 of the 25 subjects offered at A Level achieved 100% pass rates compared to 14 last year.

This is combined with a clutch of 100% pass rates on the BTEC National Diploma courses including ICT, Public Services and Dance. At the same time, high grades (Merits and Distinctions) have risen significantly. All twelve Public Services students achieved high grades. In Business, 82% of the 33 students achieved high grades and 82% of the 44 students did the same in Health and Social Care.

One of the Health and Social Care students was Tolulope Aiyegbusi, formerly of Cardinal Pole School, who achieved straight Distinctions and is now off to university to study diagnostic radiotherapy. She believes that she has made “unbelievable progress” at the College and, when asked what she thinks of BSix, she says it is “just the best”. Razma Hussain, ex-Haggerston School pupil, matched Tolulope’s performance in Business by achieving all Distinctions. Her efforts have been rewarded with a place to study Business Management at Queen Mary University of London.

The College’s Principal, Ken Warman, says that he is delighted with the results. “We had such a rise in achievement in 2008 that we were determined to stay at this level. We were in the top 5% of schools and colleges last year and we have repeated this performance again in 2009. On the back of an excellent Ofsted report in March, these results show how successful BSix is at opening up opportunities for young people. It is tremendously rewarding to think that as a result of all the hard work by our students and teachers, young people of the East End are able to go to study at places like Bristol University, Queen Mary and the London School of Economics”.

We are able to attract top quality teachers and managers to the College who can make sure that our students have a really rewarding and successful experience.

As a result, we have been inundated with applications, double the number of 2008, to study at BSix this year.
