BSix helps the Sixth Form Colleges’ Forum celebrate  launch of Sixth Form Colleges’ new, unique status

Special event showcases talent and achievements of the sector

On April 1st Sixth Form Colleges became unique institutions, entirely distinct both from schools and colleges of further education.  To celebrate this recognition of their exceptional and distinctive contribution to 16-18 education, the Sixth Form Colleges’ Forum held a celebratory launch event.

Held at lunchtime on April 21st at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre, the celebration was hosted by academic and broadcaster Marcus du Sautoy, Sixth Form College alumnus and now Charles Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science.

The event was designed around performances and displays that illustrate the breadth of student talent, pastoral life and curriculum which are the hallmarks of a Sixth Form College education. BSix was invited to   showcase its unique approach to “student voice” called Learning Advocacy. Students are trained to observe lessons , undertake “mystery shopper” activities and to report their findings to college leaders. Two of BSix’s Learning Advocates , Wilkinson Boateng and Olu Aribo, spoke to College Principals and local authority dignitaries about the work they do.

BSix’s Principal, Ken Warman, said “We were honoured to be invited to tell people about our work at such an important and prestigious event. Our students are becoming star performers in the sector after this and four presentations to national conferences. They do our college and local communities great credit.”
Chief Executive David Igoe added: “We hope our many friends in government, education and media enjoyed our celebration.  Designation as a Sixth Form College signifies a coming-of-age, a sector-wide recognition of the outstanding work of our Colleges in improving the life opportunities for the thousands of students who pass through Sixth Form College doors every year.”

There was a further Hackney connection. In his concluding address , Marcus du Sautoy revealed to the audience that he is a Hackney resident and attends BSIx every Saturday because his daughter is a member of Hackney Young Musicians which uses the College’s premises. ”So , I see all the great things going on at BSix” , Professor Sautoy concluded.
