From no qualifications to Oxford

Allum Bokhari opened his results to discover that he had obtained three A*s, the new top grade, in A level Government & Politics, History and Philosophy. He is now able to take up his place at Queens College University of Oxford to study for a degree in History and Politics. Apart from stunning results, the amazing part of this story is that Allum joined BSix two years ago with no qualifications. He joined our Access to Advanced (GCSE retake) programme but made such progress that he also studied some AS levels as well.

Allum commented on receipt of his results:-

“The journey from having no qualifications at all, two years ago, to having three A*s and a place at Oxford has been both surprising and exhilarating. Perhaps I am biased but I truly believe that BSix is the best sixth form college in the country –nay, the world! I wonder if I could have achieved what I have without the help of its wonderful and charismatic teachers such as the legendary History teacher Jamie Duff. BSix consigns to the dustbin of history the myth that the state sector is some how inferior to the private sector.”

Allum took some part in the College’s Pem-Brooke programme, a unique collaboration between BSix and Pembroke College University of Oxford. Selected students undertake a year-long academic programme and a summer school replicating the life of an Oxford undergraduate. Peter Claus, who is a History tutor at Pembroke and leads the scheme, commented:-

“The intention of Pem-Brooke is to encourage more applications from young people in the East End of London. We regard BSix as the gateway into the East End and Pembroke as the gateway into Oxford and the Russell Group universities. Allum is the first to pass through these gateways. We are so pleased for him –and for us, because we have recruited an exceptional student.”

Allum is the first student from BSix to go to Oxford University. However, increasing numbers of students are taking part in the Pem-Brooke programme. Moreover, excellent AS results this year indicate that he will be the first of many in the years to come.
