BSIX STUDENTS ADDRESS NATIONAL CONFERENCE
Two students from BSix, Hackney’s Sixth Form College in Kenninghall Road, have just returned from speaking at a national conference of College Principals. The conference, an annual event organised by the Sixth Form College’s Forum was held at Robinson College Cambridge University.

The two students, Olu Aribo and Roseanne Pearson, began their session on ‘Creating a learning culture’ by asking their audience what they thought a learning culture might look like. They recorded the answers on a flipchart and then described their part in creating such a culture at BSix.
Both Olu and Roseanne are Learning Advocates. They have been trained to observe lessons, to undertake research and to make presentations to college management. They described how they go about their work and the effect they have on improving the college. The audience certainly appreciated the talk. Participants were asked to complete an evaluation form. Here are some of the comments made:
“Inspirational and innovative.”
“Excellent and thought proving and inspirational.”
“It was excellent and it was fantastic to have student involvement. It gave many exciting ideas.”
Philip Elliott, BSix’s Deputy Principal, accompanied the students and chaired the meeting. “Our students are amazing”, says Philip. “They talked with such confidence and handled an audience of top people in colleges with such skill and flair. After the talk, our students were virtually nobbled by members of the audience wanting to congratulate them and to hear more about the many exciting things that are going on at BSix.”
The College has acquired a national reputation for its innovative work on involving students in running the College. This was recognised by Ofsted which wrote about the Learning Advocates in its official publication. They were also featured in a government publication, Government Initiatives, and BSix was named Representative Organisation of the Year.
