BSix Careers Fair
16th June 2010 saw Bsix host its first ever Careers Fair. The atmosphere was vibrant as all BSix students were given the opportunity to explore different careers, investigate the world of work, increase their awareness and raise aspirations. Students were also able to find out about job, training, work experience and volunteering opportunities. 40 organisations from many different career paths participated ranging from Engineering, Creative Media to Business and Health. Volunteering and apprenticeships organisations were also represented like the CSV Young Hackney Volunteering Project, City Year London and the National Apprenticeships service.

Ex BSix students shared their varied experience of how they progressed into the world of work. In addition, there were displays, presentations running on plasma screens, video footage of people talking about their careers and a Careers drop-in service.
A student who commented on the success and usefulness of the fair said,
“I found it very useful and felt comfortable asking questions. I found out about work experience in law and how people from a similar background to me achieve”.
Visitors commented on how impressed they were with BSix students. They also praised staff and Student Ambassadors for their assistance throughout the day:
Dominic Maher of Inspire! Hackney’s Education’s Partnership was impressed:
“We think it’s been one of the best career days we’ve attended and we have spoken to a good number of students.”
Surma Waheed of Brokerage Citylink said: “I thought the organisation of the fair was brilliant and it is good to see other organisations from different sectors.” While Judy Stent of Jobcentre Plus was equally pleased: “Your staff and students have been the best. It’s been a good atmosphere and a good day.”
The BSix Careers Fair forms part of the College’s strategy for preparing young people for the future – university and employment. It follows the hugely successful BSix University Fair held in the same canteen in March.
“This was our first Careers Fair. It was a great event and a brilliant success”, says Ken Warman, BSix Principal. “Our thanks have to go to our staff who organised the event, our students who helped on the day and the many organisations that took part.”
The Careers Fair is to be followed by a World of Work week. “There will be many speakers at BSix explaining how they entered their careers and what you have to do to be highly successful”, explains Miri Georgiou, BSix’s World of Work Leader. “Many students will be going off to visit workplaces and learning about what it is really like to pursue careers in sectors such as science, law and business.”
The Careers Fair and World of Work week are just two of the many activities put on for students at BSix in order to encourage “learning beyond the classroom.”
