BSix expands award winning Raising Aspirations scheme

BSix Sixth Form College is to expand its menu of targeted University programmes from September 2011 after an extremely successful pilot during the 2010-2011 academic year.

The scheme is run in collaboration with the college's four strategic partner Universities; Pembroke College, Oxford, the University of York, City University and Queen Mary University of London.

Each programme works with students from a specific subject area providing much-needed information, advice and guidance as well as undergraduate lectures, independent learning skills and a "real" University experience in the form of a residential summer school.

For the coming year BSix has expanded its partner University network to include Imperial College London, the University of Cambridge, London South Bank University and the London School of Economics. The college is also in the final stages of negotiating partnership programmes with three other partner Universities.

These programmes will be embedded into the curriculum from September 2011 and will ensure each participant receives a full menu of outreach activities from a top ranking University in their chosen subject.

The Raising Aspirations scheme this year catered for 100 students across multiple disciplines and was funded by the LETG AimHigher Partnership. The college was recognised for its success in delivering such innovative programmes when it received a London Education Partnership award in June 2011 for Building Bridges and developing a strategic cross-organisational impact.

In 2011-2012 the scheme expects to engage around 250 students in subjects such as History & Politics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Medicine, Anthropology, Maths, Economics, Law, Psychology and Sociology. It will also include targeted relationships between BND National Diploma students in the areas of Healthcare, Business and Media & Music Technology.

Each programme will consist of an introductory visit to their chosen University's campus, six undergraduate level lectures in their chosen subject area, two days of intense independent learning skills workshops and a 3-5 day residential summer school in July 2012.

"BSix is extremely lucky to be working with such top-ranking institutions" says Ian Power, Raising Aspirations Coordinator at BSix. "We recognised in October 2010 that Universities were looking to approach their relationships with colleges and schools differently and we capitalised on the opportunity to experiment which was provided by the local LETG AimHigher partnership".

"The fact BSix is investing in Raising Aspirations, by designing these bespoke programmes and appointing a dedicated officer, highlights the college's commitment to raising the achievement and aspirations of our students" added Ian.
