BSix College Showcase provider for World Skills 2011!
Last week, BSix staff and students had an amazing experience at WorldSkills London 2011, the largest ever international skills competition and careers event.

Young people from 51 countries were competing to be the best of the best in their chosen skill. More than 200,000 people from the UK visited and were inspired by the dedication of the teams taking part in the competition. Visitors were also able to "Have a Go" at hundreds of new skills, meet top employers and get specialist careers advice to help make that important next step.
BSix was selected from hundreds of entries to provide a Showcase in Art & Design for the event! The showcase was titled "Creative & Up-Coming in East London" and it displayed student work which clearly demonstrated the extraordinary mix and fusion of cultures that is present at BSix. 90% of the art BSix students produce is made from recycled materials. Students are encouraged to find materials and objects which had a previous life not associated with art & design. The material is often unique, mostly from the everyday or more often discarded. These are then adapted and incorporated into the most popular form of work produced which is categorised as assemblage. Of course this process is nothing new, but the vibrancy and experimentation with which the work is created marks out the work at BSix as being very different from other art departments!

We were also an integral part of the "Host borough colleges Sports showcase" with our students demonstrating table tennis skills as well as some phenomenal dancing – check out our student, Malik's performance on YouTube!

Sarah Kerrigan, Sports & BSeven coordinator at BSix commented, "Our students were excellent examples of the thriving talent & skills at BSix and within the Olympic host boroughs in general. It was a very proud moment to see them performing and demonstrating their skills to an international audience!"
Our Student Ambassadors also gained invaluable experience working on our exhibition stand. Rebekah Harris, Head of External Relations' said: "I was thrilled to see how well our Ambassadors interacted with Year11 students who came to enquire about our courses. They gave honest and useful advice and guidance and we have already received our first applications for 2012-13 as a result!"
