BSix Sixth Form College achieves prestigious ‘Golden Award!’
“You know it when you see it, don’t you, that engagement of people as people. What goes on in meetings, how people talk to each other. You get a sense of energy, engagement, commitment and belief in what the organisation stands for” Quotation from David MacLeod (The Extra Mile, MacLeod Report: Engaging for Success 2010).
For me this quote encapsulated my findings at BSix during the assessment.
Gill Atmeare Investors in People assessor
BSix College have just been awarded the Gold standard by Investors in People. Investors in People is an organisation that works both nationally and internationally to support businesses to transform the way they work with people. Regular assessment against a framework of multiple criteria helps to ensure continuous improvement. The number of indicators achieved is collated and the level of award determined is dependent on the total.
Achieving Gold status means that BSix is in the top 3% of the 45,000 UK organisations who currently hold Investors in People accreditation. Being a Gold organisation gives you the opportunity to apply to become an Investors in People Champion to provide support and guidance to other aspiring businesses.
Gill Atmeare wrote in her final report saying:
When I carried out the initial assessment in 2010 BSix was an impressive organisation given what had been achieved in a relatively short period of time. In the three years since the last assessment the college has continued on it journey and has taken the good practice that they had put in place and have simply taken it to the next level in every aspect; it is this approach that has made a substantial contribution to the organisations success through people.
During the assessment the Senior Leadership team was consistently praised for their visibility, presence and support and the fact that this is highly valued by people throughout the organisation. As a result of the college’s success and reputation people explained that they have chosen to work at BSix as part of their career development. In answer to the question, ‘What is the best thing about BSix?’ Comments included…
‘We are on to something good and I want to be part of this and it motivates me’
‘The buzz and energy’
‘The people and the fact that they want to improve the community’
‘The people I work with and the strong sense of team across the department and the college as a whole’
‘The investment in me and the opportunities I have been given and the belief and trust people have in me’
‘The Students especially when they come back and tell us how we helped them and what they have achieved’
‘The students - I tell them I am here every day because of you and for you and they make me laugh’
John Telfer, Managing Director of Inspiring Business Performance Ltd (IBP), the organisation that delivers Investors in People for London and the South, said: "The current economic climate makes it even more important that an organisation adapts to survive. BSix is a shining example that proves organisations can achieve great things during challenging times.
"Being recognised as an Investor in People is becoming increasingly more important, and the higher the level of accreditation, the better it reflects on your organisation to potential employees, investors and customers. BSix should be extremely proud of their achievement."
Rebekah Westgate, Assistant Principal Staff and Student Recruitment said that, “The Investors in People assessment was a vital learning process and we are already looking at ways to improve the areas identified in the report. I am also looking forward to meeting with Gill again soon to plan for BSix College’s involvement as an ‘Investors in People Champion!"
