A Level Art & Design
Why study for a GCE A level Art & Design?
If you enjoyed or were successful in an art & design subject at GCSE level, then take your skills further with this 'A' level course. 'A' level Art & Design covers a wide range of basic skills such as drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture but extends them through a more rigorous and extended levels of experimentation and research. The course is a general art & design endorsement so you can choose to take the set projects into any area of art & design that you wish. Art & design is both a practical and an academic subject , where you will develop your personal direction as an artist or designer through looking, doing and discussing. The career paths for art & design students are well established with a vast range of specialist higher education courses in art & design for you to take. If you consider that everything you see around you, has been designed or created by an artist or designer at some level, you will understand how powerful and empowering this subject can be.
How does the course run?
A level is split over two years of study AS & A2 with successful completion of one you will progress to the other. Both years have a similar structure based on two units of work per academic year which have equal value towards your qualification. The qualification is generally a practical exploration where course work is submitted and marked by the centre. At A2 there is a written requirement to produce a continuous piece of writing, but this is a personal exploration which is developed through the course. Both years culminate in a controlled assessment or exam, which again is practical and proceeded by 4 weeks of preparation.
