  Nadia Carvalho   Nadia Carvalho,
Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care Y1

Originally from Cape Verde, Nadia first came to BSix Sixth Form College in summer 2014. Speaking only Portuguese and Creole, she enrolled onto an ESOL course that year.

In the Progression Department, Nadia studied Functional Maths and ESOL. Her progress in that year was impressive and only one year after having come to the UK, Nadia was able to progress to Health and Social Care Level 3. Due to her ability, perseverance, conscientiousness and passion for the subject she is now on course to achieve a Distinction in Health Care and a grade C in English.

Nadia showed enthusiasm and motivation to learn as much as possible from the very start. She has involved herself with college life and is part of the women's football team and has studied Japanese at BSix in her free time. Nadia aspires to study Psychology or Nursing and is a fantastic example of a determined student whose thirst for learning and hard work have allowed her to achieve and progress each year. Nadia surely represents well the BSix ethos of Aspire, Study and Achieve.

  Augusta Clarkson   Augusta Clarkson,
Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care Y2

Augusta arrived in the UK from Sierra Leone in 2012. Speaking only Krio she enrolled on an ESOL course at BSix that year. Augusta successfully gained Entry Level 3 qualifications the following year in English & Maths along with a BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Health and Social Care.

The following year she enrolled on to BTEC Level 2 Health and Social Care in which she gained a Merit grade along with Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths. This year Augusta will complete her BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health & Social Care. She has completed over 100 hours in work placements and has applied to study nursing at university.

Throughout her time at BSix Augusta has always striven to improve and be the best she can be. She has continued to attend support classes on every Level she has studied. Augusta has had to overcome learning difficulties and barriers to learning outside college. She is a fine example of how with the right attitude and commitment to studies you can achieve your goals. Her story also demonstrates the value of BSix College in the local community where students can arrive in the country with no English and four years later be attending university.

  Storm McGivern   Storm McGivern,
Childcare Level 2

Storm joined BSix from local Hackney school, The Urswick School, in September 2013 to study Level 1 Childcare. Shortly after having started the course, Storm became pregnant and developed a heart condition, however, her determination and commitment allowed her to complete the course successfully. Being a young mother and the primary carer for her grandmother, with whom she lives in a small flat in Hackney, Storm took a break from her studies last year.

With the support offered by her tutor, she was motivated to make a step forward and return to BSix this academic year. She is now studying the CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Caring for Children, GCSE English and Maths and her progress is impressive. Storm is predicted to achieve the CACHE Level 2 Certificate and gain a grade C in GCSE English.

Storm is a fantastic example of a determined student who has worked hard to achieve and progress despite mitigating circumstances. She also demonstrates one of the fantastic and unique aspects of BSix' provision which enables students to start at the right entry level depending on their background and previous results and how they are then supported to progress through the levels and ultimately onto university or into the world of work – let's see where Storm's next progression will take her to!
