About The Course

English Language and Literature offers a wide range of opportunities to develop an understanding and appreciation of reading fiction and non-fiction texts. The course is great for anyone who enjoys reading widely and is keen to develop analytical and creative writing skills.

You will study a wide range of literary and non-literary genres such as fiction, drama and poetry; as well as journalism, autobiography, letters, scripts, graphic non-fiction, diaries and speeches. You will explore and compare how writers and speakers use language and structure to express their thoughts and feelings and how language choices are influenced by context, audience, genre and purpose. Through your reading, you will be able to develop skills required to assess the relative merits of texts, to be analytical, consider other viewpoints and make connections across texts in order to understand and evaluate the effects of a variety of contexts.

This course also gives you a chance to deepen your enjoyment of English language and literature both through reading, analysis and by developing your own creative writing skills.

How Is The Course Taught?

Your teacher will deliver sessions covering the entire course where you will have opportunities to discuss and debate various topics with your peers. Handouts, booklets and learning resources will be provided and you will be given access to the VLE for additional material. As part of your regular independent study, you will be expected to make use of the LRC.

How will I be Assessed?

The course comprises 3 examined units taken at the end of year 2. Coursework is also completed in year 2 and is worth 20% of the final grade. You will be given weekly homework and regular in-class assessments as progress checks.

What does it lead to?

This course is ideal if you wish to study a humanities degree at university.  The analytical, interpretative, communication and discursive skills you will develop will be ideal for careers in journalism, media, publishing, education, performing arts, law and business, with salaries up to £40,000 to £60,000.
