About The Course

English Literature covers a variety of texts from the 17th to 21st century and you will explore the past and present through drama, prose and poetry. You will need to be keen reader to discover perspectives, ideas, beliefs, values and investigate the varying contexts of writers by exploring cultural, social, historical and political influences. Interpretation is key and you will engage in close reading, analytical writing and debates to explore the significance and influence of the way literary texts are written and received. You will also develop your own coursework portfolio of 3,000 words on three modern texts.  

How Is The Course Taught?

You will be taught by subject specialist teachers using a range of resources and activities. Self-led learning, research and revision is a key element and you will be expected to organise your time and subject folders in a professional manner. To devise and develop your coursework you will have a weekly session in an IT suite. You will also be expected to make use of the shared space of the LRC.

How will I be Assessed?

Over two years you will be internally assessed via key assignments, independent research tasks and mock exams. In the final year you will be examined on two modules: pre-1900 texts and post-1900 texts (worth 80% of the qualification). Your coursework will be internally marked and externally moderated (worth 20% of the qualification)  

What does it lead to?

This course is ideal if you wish to study a humanities degree at university.  The analyticalinterpretative, communication and discursive skills you will develop will be ideal for careers in journalism, media, publishing, education, performing arts, law and business, with salaries up to £40,000 to £60,000
