About The Course

The GCSE Business Studies course will provide you the foundation and insight into how businesses are set up and what it is that makes someone a great entrepreneur. You will learn to develop many soft skills that are vital in the world of business. There are 2 themes that will be covered during the course which are Theme 1 & 2. In Theme 1 you will concentrate on the key business concepts, issues and skills involved in starting and running a small business. It provides a framework for students to explore core concepts through the lens of an entrepreneur in setting up a business. You will also gain a wider understanding of how national and local businesses operate. Theme 2 focuses on the key business concepts, issues and decisions used to grow a business, with emphasis on aspects of marketing, operations, finance, and human resources. Theme 2 also considers the impact of the wider world on the decisions a business makes as it grows. You will be taught by specialist teachers who have been delivering the course for many years. The course will be taken alongside other GCSEs including Maths and English which will be giving you well-rounded knowledge. You will also be encouraged by your teachers to enterprise during your time at the college.  

How Is The Course Taught?

There will be 2 teachers teaching GCSE Business Studies, you will have 1 year to complete the course and sit the exam in the same year. Each theme/paper will be taught by separate teachers. The course will be taught in the classroom, where will have access to the LRC to computers to help you do research. You will have many opportunities to go out on external trips to city workshops which you will learn about the world of business. This gives students first have experience on how people work in the city. You will be able to work from home and access the resources anytime using our online learning platforms. You will have independent learning time where you can go to the LRC or work in groups to complete a task.

How will I be Assessed?

At the end of the year, you will have 2 exams. Both papers will be 1 hour and 30 minutes. The assessment is out of 90 marks. Each paper is divided into three sections Section A: 35 marks, Section B: 30 marks and Section C: 25 marks. Each paper will also consist of calculations, multiple–choice, short–answer and extended writing questions.

What does it lead to?

GCSE Business Studies prepares you for AS/A2 Levels as well as BTEC.  You will become skilled in making decisions, being creative, solving problems, understanding finance, dealing with data, communicating, and working as part of a team.  Even if you do not want to go on to study business further you can start looking for level 3 apprenticeships.  The course could lead you to work in a business-related profession such as accountancy, law, marketing or the leisure and tourism industry.
