About The Course
Level 3 Core Maths is a Level 3 Certificate in Mathematical Studies that is a good choice for students who would like to carry on developing their mathematical skills but have not chosen to study A Level Mathematics.
It supports students’ learning in other Level 3 subjects (A-Level or BTEC) that require quantitative skills or mathematical reasoning, such as Economics, Business, Psychology, Sociology, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science, Computer Science, and ICT.
The course is graded A-E and has the same number of UCAS tariff points as an AS level qualification, (40% of a full A-Level).
How Is The Course Taught?
Lessons are a mixture of class discussion, note-taking, group work, and individual work, with short quizzes and learning checks to consolidate learning.
You will use the methods taught on the course to analyse data from real-life situations and draw conclusions. You will also investigate and model situations to make reasonable estimates and predictions. This will include the use of spreadsheets and a range of online platforms. Topics covered include Data analysis, Personal Finance, Modelling and Estimation, Critical Analysis, Probability, and Managing Risk.
How will I be Assessed?
You will be assessed throughout the year through a series of formative assessment methods, including mock exams.
At the end of the year, you will sit 2 final exams. Each of these exams are 90 minutes long and each worth 60 marks.
What does it lead to?
Some universities will accept a Level 3 Mathematics qualification in place of a higher grade at GCSE maths, 1 as they recognise that the qualification builds students’ skills and confidence in using mathematics; so that they are better equipped for the mathematical demands of higher education and employment.
The University of Bath will drop their entrance criteria by one grade if a student attains Grade B in Core Maths2
Please note that this qualification is not equivalent to full A-Level, and is not a replacement qualification for courses that require A Level Mathematics.
