About The Course

The BTEC Level 2 First Extended Certificate is a one-year full-time course, which will provide you with the skills to progress to further study on courses such as the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT and ultimately into the IT employment sector.

The BTEC First Extended Certificate at Level 2 is equivalent to 3 GCSEs at grade C or above. This qualification is designed to provide you with a foundation in the growing applications of digital technology.

The range of units provides variety and a suitable foundation for the digital industry to enable you to take your first steps into employment or as a basis for further study.

How Is The Course Taught?

This course is taught through various methods. Some will be practical experience, lecture-style lessons, group work, presentations and simulation-based work.

You will have 2 teachers teaching on the course. You will study a range of units that will be taught in different engaging ways. You will need to complete and pass 8 units in total to achieve a grade of level 2 pass, merit or distinction.

You have to complete group work as well as work independently. You will have some creative units in which you will design a website and create a mobile app.

How will I be Assessed?

You will be encouraged to take responsibility for your own learning and achievement, taking account of the industry standards for behaviour and performance.

Our delivery strategies reflect the nature of work within the IT sector by encouraging you to research and carry out assessments in simulated working conditions. There are 2 compulsory theory units, which will be assessed by external onscreen tests under exam conditions.

The remaining practical units are assessed internally, and you will use a variety of software, multimedia tools and techniques to develop a coursework-based portfolio for each unit. These will be used to assess the standard you have reached.

What does it lead to?

On successful completion of this course with a Merit or Distinction, you will have the option of progressing onto the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in ICT or looking for apprenticeships.
