About The Course

The course involves reading and writing on a variety of engaging texts from the 19th to the 21st century. This one-year course will develop your ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively in both reading and writing. You will learn to employ a wide-ranging vocabulary, use correct grammar, spelling and punctuation, and develop an awareness of audience and purpose.  You will also have the opportunity to discuss, debate and present in your lessons which will help you become a confidant and fluent speaker of English. You are also encouraged to read widely to prepare you to become a competent and accurate writer of both fiction and non-fiction.   

How Is The Course Taught?

You will be taught by subject specialist teachers using a range of resources and activities. Self-led learning, research and revision is a key element and you will be expected to organise your time and subject folders in a professional manner. 

How will I be Assessed?

Over the year you will be internally assessed via written assessments, homework tasks and mock exams. You will take two public exams at the end of the year:  Paper 1 reading and writing on one fiction text; Paper 2 reading and writing on two non-fiction texts.

What does it lead to?

This qualification is a general one that enables students to progress directly to employment or to proceed to further qualifications. Candidates who are awarded grades 9 to 4 in this course are well prepared to study level 3 A level or vocational programmes.
